Our Breaking Bad season 5, episode 15 recap looks back at the events that unfolded during the episode titled “Granite State.”

Following last week’s episode which was regarded as one of the best of the series, Jack starts insulting Lydia, and Todd – who has been interested in her in ways outside of business – is visibly upset and embarrassed but doesn’t say anything to his uncle.

Back down in the cage with Jesse, he is deformed badly from the previous beating he’s taken. He holds the picture of his old girlfriend and Brock. He takes the paper clip off the picture and starts trying to take his chains off.

Walt and Saul are together at the vaccuum cleaners and asks Saul to give him a list of “hitters, mercenaries.” He wants enough people to kill Jack’s crew. Walt tells Saul that his wife is a “blameless victim,” but Saul says that the call he made to Skyler is a good idea. He says that Skyler is still going to be put in jail for a year and a half.

Saul tells Walt that everything is being monitored, and it would be impossible to give Skyler money. Saul asks Walt to stay home and “face the music.” He tells him that if he goes into jail, it may smooth over things with Skyler and the police.

Walt tells Saul that he is going to kill Jack and his crew. He intends on getting back all of his money, so that he can give it to his family. The cleaner comes through and Walt tells him that Saul is coming with him.

Saul tries talking his way out of it, but Walt is forcing him to go along with the plan. Walt threatens Saul, and says that “it’s not over,” but then starts coughing and can’t finish his sentence. Saul says “it’s over,” as he walks out of the room with his suitcase.

Skyler is in a room with her lawyer and DEA agents. She doesn’t hear anything but ringing in her ears. They ask if she’s even listening, or if she understands what is happening. Skyler says that she understand she is “in terrible trouble,” and that she knows the DEA will do everything in their power to get information from her about Walt – but she doesn’t know where he’s at.

They ask that she take some time with her lawyer and “wrack her brain” so that she can come up with something they can use. Skyler is back at the White home smoking as police survey her house.

As she walks towards Holly’s room, she unexpectedly finds Todd and some of Jack’s crew in her house with ski masks on. Todd asks if there is anyone else in the house and Skyler shakes her head no. Her mouth is covered by one of Todd’s associates, as Todd asks her if she’s going to scream if they let her go.

Skyler begs that they don’t hurt Holly, and Todd explains that they have respect for Walt, but Todd asks if she has said anything about Lydia to the police.

Todd explains that the police “don’t need to know anything about her,” and asks her to repeat what he just said. Skyler says she won’t say anything about her “ever, I swear.” Todd asks her if she’s going to go running to the police when they leave, but she says she won’t.

Todd says good, because she doesn’t want them coming back. They escape out of the back door/window as Skyler grabs Holly.

Todd is dressed up at the diner to meet Lydia. She walks in with her Jackie O shades again and sits down opposite of Todd. She insist they don’t sit across from one another as they speak.

Lydia reminds him that he doesn’t need to say the names of who they’re talking about. We find out that it was Lydia who told Todd to go to Walt’s house and tell Skyler not to tell anyone about her. Lydia isn’t buying it, but Todd tells her that she isn’t going to have a problem with Skyler.

Lydia still isn’t okay with it and tells Todd they’re going to “have to take a break.” He then tells her that he has 50lbs of 92% Meth, and says “it’s blue just like before.” Todd tells her that Jessie is cooking with him.

Todd tells Lydia that he thinks they make a good team, and Lydia is clearly very excited that the product is back to “Heisenberg level.”

Walt steps out of a propane tanker truck, which he has been transported in, and steps out into snow. He’s told he is now in New Hampshire. Walt checks out his new house (cabin) and Saul’s guy explains that he has about a month’s supply of food.

Saul’s guy calls Walt Mr. Lambert and explains that normally he doesn’t have a relationship with people like him, but says, “you are you.” He then explains that there are no phones or internet service, and if he needs anything he should put it on the list.

He explains that Walt needs to lay low, as he’s probably the most wanted man in the country. Walt asks what’s keeping him from walking out of the gate and Saul’s guy explains that if he leaves the cabin, he will get caught. And that if he finds out Walt leaves, he won’t be coming back for his own safety. He leaves, and tells Walt he’ll see him in a month.

Walt opens his barrel of money and takes a couple bundles out. Then he grabs his hat out of the black duffle bag and puts it on. He immediately leaves the cabin and heads out on foot and stops at the gate and decides not to leave. He starts laughing and coughing about the fact that he can’t leave. He tells himself that he’ll leave tomorrow, repeating the word.

Back with Jessie, we see he’s gotten out of his chains and is trying to get out when Todd takes the tarp off of his cage. He has his chains back on and acts like he’s been sleeping as Todd drops down some ice cream for him. Todd tells him that he deserved something after cooking a batch of 96% pure Meth.

Todd tells Jesse he should get some sleep since they’ll have a long day tomorrow on a whole new batch. Jesse asks him if he’ll leave the top off for the night, so he can see the stars. Todd tells Jesse goodnight.

Jesse starts working on taking his chains back off, and stands on top of the can and his bed, barely balancing as he jumps up to grab the top of the cage. He climbs over to the hatch, and then struggles to unlock it and runs to a nearby metal wall. He looks around to find an exit, but there is a tall fence around the entire place.

Jesse runs to the fence and starts climbing, but we see a camera aimed towards him, then Jack’s crew runs up behind him. He jumps down off the fence and confronts them, saying to kill him because hes’s not cooking for them anymore.

Todd shows up at Andrea’s house and asks if knows Jesse. He apologies for being there so late, and then she asks how Jesse is, as Todd gets her to come out of the house. Todd shoots Andrea in the back of the head while saying “just so you know, this isn’t anything personal.”

Jessie is inconsolable as he struggles to break free from his bounded hands and mouth, but Jack tells him to settle down, and reminds him that there’s still “the kid.”

Back with Walt at the gate, he now has a beard. Clearly some time has passed. Saul’s guy has brought some newspapers for Walt to read. It’s probably been a few months, since Walt has a full head of hair now and a beard. It’s explained that the kids are still with Skyler, and she’s not in court just yet. Our guess is it’s probably been three months, based on his hair growth, and the fact that they mention him receiving chemo the last time he came back.

Walt asks about Skyler and is told she’s using her maiden name as he puts on some new glasses. His house is up for sale, and it’s explained that a fence was put up around his house, since it’s become somewhat of a tourist attraction. We saw this in the flash-forward previously, where he breaks the lock off the fence and goes into his house to grab the ricin.

Walt has apparently been taking chemo, and Saul’s guy sets him up for his next treatment. Walt asks him to stick around for another $10k, he’s incredibly lonely, and Saul’s guy agrees to stay an extra hour.

They decide to play some cards while Walt is receiving his cancer treatment. Walt tells him that one of these days when he comes up there, he’ll be dead. He asks him to give his money to his family when he’s dead. Saul’s guy says “what if I said yes, would you believe me?”

Walt is in bed coughing. He’s clearly losing a lot of weight, as his wedding ring falls off of his finger. He wakes up to the sound of it hitting the floor, and realizes it’s gone. Newspapers are strewn around his cabin, while the fire crackles, and he grabs some string to put his wedding ring on to tie around his neck.

Walt pours out the Ensure cans that were brought up in the last monthly shipment, and starts putting money in the box. He wraps the package and starts walking through the snow.

Flynn is in school and is called to the principal’s office. Marie has called him, but it’s really a lady at a bar as it’s Walt calling. He tells Walter Jr. that it’s good to hear his voice. Walt says he’s made terrible mistakes, but that he never intended to hurt them. He asks if Louis still lives at the same house. Flynn says yes, and he tells him that he’s sending him a package with $100,000 inside.

He tells him that it has to be a secret or the police will take the money. Walt says that he wanted to give them so much more, but that’s all he could get to them. Walt Jr. doesn’t respond, but then says “You killed uncle Hank!” Then he goes on a rant about what Walt has done to their family, and he says he doesn’t want anything from Walt.

Walt Jr. tells Walt to leave them alone, and asks him why he’s still alive. He just wishes Walt was dead. Walt hangs up the phone as he’s crying, then he picks the phone back up and calls the DEA. He asks to speak with the agent who is in charge of the Walter White investigation. He tells them that it’s Walter White calling, then lets the phone drop.

He sits back at the bar and the bartender asks him if he’s ready for the drink now. Walt sees something on the TV, then we find out that it’s Gray Matter’s owners and his former friends Elliot and Gretchen. He sees that his old friends have given a $28 million dollar grant to drug treatment centers.

They’re asked if they did this to lessen the blow of Walter being involved with the company early on. Elliot and Gretchen say that the only thing Walter contributed to their company was the name.

Walter is furious, and Gretchen says that the “sweet, kind man that we used to know is gone.” The police show up at the bar that Walt called, armed with shotguns. Walt is gone now, and so is the package that he had with him. The episode ends with a shot of his glass and an empty chair.

So much happened in the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad, and there’s still so much to wrap up. Walt will be headed back to grab the gun we saw in the flash-forward and he’ll be headed to his house to grab the ricin – which we still don’t know what he’ll be doing with. It may be for Elliot and Gretchen, but it may also be for Jack.

What will happen to Jesse? Will he get free after Walt kills Jack and his crew? Will Walt want to do something to be remembered by even more so now, considering Gretchen and Elliot said that he barely contributed to their multi-billion dollar company?

There’s still so much to wrap up with Walt. His family, Saul, and Jesse still have quite a few loose ends. Will Jesse and Walt team up for one final battle to kill off Jack, Todd, and Lydia? We’ll have to wait until next week.

The final episode and finale of AMC’s Breaking Bad series will air on Sunday, September 29.
