The Incredibles 2 is in development, and it may come sooner than we’d dared to hope: Brad Bird has confirmed he’ll begin working on the sequel after Tomorrowland premieres!

Pixar’s 2004 smash hit The Incredibles is finally getting a sequel, and director Brad Bird has confirmed to Collider that this will indeed be his next project.

“It feels like it to me, yeah,” Bird says, musing about his immediate career plans. Right now, “I’m just focusing on getting Tomorrowland out into the world, and [then] playing with the Incredibles sandbox again.”

We previously reported that Bird is already writing the script for the long-awaited sequel, but it’s great to get confirmation that we’ll see this movie made sooner rather than later.

“I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use,” Bird says. “I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit, and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie.”

And after that? Well, Bird might very well be lining himself up to direct a Star Wars movie (presumably Episode VIII or IX, and not one of the anthology films).

Bird reveals in the interview that he’s been speaking to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the possibility, saying, “J.J. [Abrams] got very excited about the notion of shaping the next [Star Wars] trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too.”

Brad Bird is currently promoting Tomorrowland, which hits cinemas on May 22.
