Brad Bird says the long-awaited Pixar sequel will take the Incredibles family “in some new directions.”

While promoting Tomorrowland, Brad Bird announced that his next project would be the hotly anticipated sequel to his 2004 Pixar movie The Incredibles.

Bird has been keeping fairly quiet about the project since then, but now comes a small update via Entertainment Weekly.

“It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it,” says Bird. “[We’re] trying to take it in some new directions.”

Bird adds, “Hopefully it’s the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction. I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”

The writer-director won’t disclose any additional details because, as he says, “I don’t like unwrapping presents before Christmas.”

As EW notes, the Incredibles sequel is going to come out during a very different time than the original. Back in 2004, superhero movies weren’t really a thing yet, but from now until 2019 we’ll pretty much be bombarded with them from every angle.

We wonder if Brad Bird’s Incredibles 2 will attempt to tackle any of the issues of the superhero movie genre, or offer any of the commentary which Pixar films tend to excel at.

The first movie takes place in the 1990s, 15 years after the public turned on the so-called “Supes” and forced Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl to abandon their powers. But now, they are once again called to action, and begin to fight crime with their children Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack.

The Incredibles sequel premieres on June 21, 2019.
