The release date has been set for Sundance hit Boyhood from adored filmmaker Richard Linklater.

In a press release, IFC Films has announced that they will release Richard Linklater’s Boyhood this summer on July 11.

As the film is expected to be an awards season contender the summer release date is a bit surprising, but it shows that IFC Films has confidence that it won’t be forgotten. Its release in the middle of blockbuster season will offer a nice alternative.

Boyhood is a film that Linklater had been filming for 12 years. It chronicles the life of a boy growing up on screen.

This was certainly an ambitious project, and it premiered to stellar reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in January. According to review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, all 17 reviews of the film thus far have been positive, and its 9.1/10 average score is perhaps even more impressive.

12 years is a long time to film a movie, so long in fact that Linklater has released 10 movies in the meantime. Some of the most notable to have come in that time are School of Rock, Before Sunset, Bernie, and Before Midnight. Linklater has certainly grown as a filmmaker in the 12 years, so it will be interesting to see how his filmmaking progresses throughout the film or if he was able to keep a consistent tone.

Synopsis:

With a screenplay by Linklater, the film stars Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Lorelei Linklater. BOYHOOD had its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival.

Filmed over short periods from 2002 to 2013, BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking cinematic experience covering 12 years in the life of a family. At the center is Mason, who with his sister Samantha, is taken on an emotional and transcendent journey through the years, from childhood to adulthood.
