The phrase #BoycottMulan is trending as lead Mulan actress Liu Yifei expresses her support of the Hong Kong police on social media.

The story of Mulan is one of courage, of a young woman risking it all to save her family and her country, and of protecting those who can’t protect themselves. So, naturally, people weren’t very happy when the star of Disney’s upcoming live-action Mulan, Liu Yifei, expressed support for the Hong Kong police department, and #BoycottMulan has started to trend on social media.

If you aren’t aware of what is going on in Hong Kong, a quick and incredibly over-simplified explanation of the most recent events over there can be explained as the residents of Hong Kong have been engaging in pro-democracy protests after a bill was proposed that would let mainland China extradite criminals. Those protests have gotten bigger and bigger (even shutting down the Hong Kong airport), and the response of the Hong Kong police has gotten more and more violent, garnering discussions of the Hong Kong law enforcement’s engagement in human rights violations.

It’s an incredibly heated political issue, and people’s lives are hanging in the balance. So Mulan fans were a bit surprised when Yifei took to Weibo, a Chinese social media platform, and reposted an image from the state-backed news source, People’s Daily, that expressed support for the Hong Kong police, adding a hashtag that said, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “I also support the Hong Kong police.”

Understandably, it didn’t take long for fans to react. While her nearly 65 million followers in China seemed to react largely positively to the post, those outside of China have accused the actress of supporting police brutality and the suppression of human rights and started the hashtag #BoycottMulan.

As THR explains, #BoycottMulan began at a Hong Kong-based website called Lihkg that is similar to Reddit. The site is a sort of online hub for the Hong Kong protests and is hoping for international support in the boycott, calling on moviegoers to skip Mulan to show their support of freedom and democracy.

This will certainly be a big hurdle for Disney to navigate. It’s unclear how the #BoycottMulan movement will impact Mulan’s performance at the box office, and if Disney will address the controversy.

At this time, both Yifei and Disney haven’t commented on Yifei’s social media post or the boycott.
