Better off Friends is a pitch perfect contemporary novel that asks the age old question, can guys and girls just be friends?

For Macallan and Levi, it was friends at first sight. Everyone says guys and girls can’t be just friends, but these two are. They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan’s friends. They are platonic and happy that way.

Eventually they realize they’re best friends — which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t keep getting in each other’s way. Guys won’t ask Macallan out because they think she’s with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can’t help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?

Review: ‘Better Off Friends’

Better Off Friends takes a witty, snarky look at what it means to be friends in high school with a member of the opposite sex. Elizabeth Eulberg delivers a fresh take on male/female friendships and the way society judges them.

The story is told in alternating points of view between Macallan and Levi. The story begins when they first meet in middle school and continues through high school. Levi and Macallan are truly best friends but others always wonder why they aren’t more. In fact on several occasions their friendship interferes with their actual relationships.

As the reader, there are several moments you want to lock the two in a room until they figure it out. At the same time the experiences they have are realistic, you don’t feel like you are reading about improbable situations. Both Macallan and Levi are well developed and easily relatable.

There is plenty of banter as these two characters try to figure out who they are and what they want to be to each other. Elizabeth Eulberg has written another fantastic contemporary novel with richly drawn characters that are as smart as they are funny.

Better off Friends is a modern take on When Harry Met Sally that is sure to please lovers of contemporary. The novel is by Elizabeth Eulberg and available now through Point.
