All The Truth That’s In Me by Julie Berry is a Young Adult thriller/mystery that uses a striking voice to tell a unique story.

All The Truth That’s In Me is the story of Judith, who disappeared from her home town two years ago with her best friend, and just returned – mutilated and alone.

Unable to speak, Judith can not tell anyone what has happened to her – not even Lucas, the boy she has always loved. It is up to Judith to deal with her experiences in silence and in solitude.

As Judith struggles to find her voice, long-ignored secrets come to the surface. Unable to accept her in her damaged state, she finds that her homecoming is nothing like she expect.

But when her town faces a threat that could destroy it, will she risk everything to save it? Even if it means losing Lucas, and losing herself?

Review: ‘All The Truth That’s In Me’

All The Truth That’s In Me uses a startling and striking voice. The construct of the story requires the reader to be inside Judith’s head, because otherwise there is no story. But as Judith’s speech gradually develops, the story also changes into something much deeper.

It is surprising and heartbreaking, whether or not you are invested in Judith’s infatuation with Lucas, you will fall for this poor damaged girl who has been through an ordeal that no one should have suffered, and somehow managed to come out the other side.

The book is certainly confronting, but ultimately there is a degree of comfort offered by Berry – although not necessarily in the manner you would expect. The plot is partly focused on Judith’s past experiences, and her struggle to come to terms with the life she has lost.

But Berry doesn’t dwell – this isn’t a flashback novel. Instead she uses the mysteries of the past to drive the possibilities and consequences of the future. In All The Truth That’s In Me, everything is connected.

With a balanced approach, Berry avoids any victim or survivor cliches – instead she gives us a very real character. In our interview with Berry (coming later this week), she expressed her hope that readers are lost in Judith’s story while they are reading the book. We can guarantee that Judith will stay with you long past the last page.
