Bones season 10, episode 14, “The Putter in the Rough,” focused on the real life world of professional mini-golf. Read on for the full recap!

This week’s murder wasn’t very interesting but the Wendell and Bones storylines made up for it. Let’s dig in!

The Case of the Week:

A man, who was seemingly going to jump to his death, finds a body in a parking garage and this convinces him not to follow through with his suicide. The man is a professional mini-golfer the team discovers and there just so happens to be a version of the Masters for mini-golf currently taking place. Both Booth and Aubrey find this to be more than the normal amount of ridiculous.

Turns out the man was shot in the back of the head with a shotgun in one of the tiki huts on the mini-golf course. He was also having an affair with an 18-year-old girl, whose father was a member of the tournament and had some anger issues. But the evidence points back to the golfer’s investor and he’s off the hook. However when an over-looked piece of evidence proves to be a painted nail and not blood, the real murderer is revealed to be the investor’s wife. She didn’t like that the two men were going to go to a National mini-golf tournament and leave her behind. So she killed her “competition” and saved her marriage. But as Booth and Brennan told her, that’s not self-defense.

The Lab Family:

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite squintern, Wendell! He is at his girlfriend’s apartment (their apartment?) and he is looking at a clock that, he is informed, was given to her by her grandma. While she is out of the room, he tries winding it up and it makes a horrible breaking noise. He tells her that he is going to have it cleaned for her and takes it to the lab. There he enlists Hodgins to help him fix it.

This is the lighthearted comedy portion of the show and any time these two get together it pays off. Hodgins, after breaking it again, goes online and buys a replica for $9 — that means that this clock is not an heirloom. They are able to fix the clock and Wendell ‘fesses up to his lady love about what happened. She tells him the clock never worked and that now that clock is theirs because it works. Aww, how cute.

The more serious side of the episode, minus the murder of course, is the fact that Brennan believes Max is back to his old tricks when he abruptly has to cancel on his plans with Christine. She worries enough to Booth, and he ends up putting a tracker on Max at her request. This leads to them to find out he has been picked up by the police in Ohio.

When he’s brought back, Booth gets the charges of grave robbing dropped and Brennan can barely focus on the case. At the end of the episode, however, we find out why he dug up the body. It was the body of the man who used Brennan and her brother to control Max and his wife, basically the reason they abandoned them when they were younger. Max wanted to make sure it really was him, the man was the tenth most wanted man which is why the charges were dropped. He brought back an old ring of Brennan’s, who had her dad give it to Christine.
