This week’s episode of Bones “Partners in the Divorce” gets the audience back to the old familiar tension between Booth and Brennan.

Bones opens this week with homeless men who follow the smell of “chicken” and instead stumble upon burning flesh.

With Brennan back home and attempting to cook, tension and awkwardness abounds for the couple. Brennan reveals she was a fry cook down in North Carolina when she was on the road. Booth feels out of place with Brennan cooking and feels like he lost three months with Brennan and their daughter Christine. A couple of awkward moments ensue with missed kisses as the couple tries to regain their footing after three months apart before a case arises.

The murder scene is under a bridge, like the one Brennan reveals she once slept under during her time on the run. Hodgins can’t determine time of death while Booth steps in some remnants of brain. Poor guy, his morning hasn’t been going so well. Brennan and Booth’s tension boils over in front of the staff as they argue over who is supposed to explain the possible circumstance of the murder.

The squintern gets a bit squeamish with the human flesh while Cam treats the flesh as a usual occurrence. The victim suffered fractures to the ribs and fibulas and has injuries that suggest heart surgery. Cam discovered that the victim could be identified through stents.

Booth and Dr. Sweets’ friendship is highlighted with their discussion of Booth and Brennan’s relationship at the gun range. Booth figures out through Dr. Sweets that he’s angry and that he’s searching for normalcy even though it’s an unusual and stressful situation.

The victim is identified as Richard Bartlet, a “white shoe” divorce lawyer, also known as a divorce lawyer for rich people according to his wealthy wife. She describes Bartlet as ruthless and refers Booth and Brennan to her husband’s assistant Margo Sandoval.

When the pair gets to Bartlet’s penthouse office, Brennan continues to reference the new experiences that Christine experienced during the three months and jokes at the idea of the couple getting married. Meanwhile back at the lab, the gang figures out that the victim was killed by a fountain pen.

At the office, Margo Sandoval is interviewed after shredding documents. That combined with a missing fountain pen and blood make the office a crime scene.

Angela questions Brennan about the tension between her and Booth but to no avail. Booth and Sweets also talk about the uneasy relationship and find a divorce case that was highly contentious, Carmichael v. Carmichael. Parallels are made with the newly reunited couple and Booth and Brennan as the wife is pregnant and they have called off the divorce.

Despite the plot twist of the victim’s wife and his assistant photographed intimate on his desk, the Carmichaels were the murderers. The husband Gavin had not paid the victim and an argument broke out. His wife Melanie stabbed the attorney with a fountain pen while Gavin chucked him down a construction chute. A happily reunited couple who ended up not so happy in jail.

By the end of the episode, Booth and Brennan realized they missed each other and that although they were fine on their own, they operated best as a team. The episode ended with Brennan trying to make her absence up to Booth by a family outing to the carousel and a kiss for Booth.
