One of the most devastating deaths Bones fans have been dealt with throughout the course of the series was the death of Lance Sweets. The show filled that spot with FBI Agent Aubrey and it’s time to see how he’s doing!

The start of season 10 promised to be a big one, but no one could have prepared for what happened. Booth, having destroyed his house while being attacked by Delta Force operatives as a part of a government conspiracy, is in jail and having a bad time. When the team finds evidence, Sweets is attacked and Aubrey arrives to the scene of the crime too late to do anything to help him and he dies in Booth’s arms.

Aubrey, played by John Boyd, ends up joining the team as Booth’s “partner,” or at least his FBI partner. At first glance, he strongly resembles Sweets, at least in appearance. Both also have quirks that Booth likes to point out and make fun of, all good naturedly. His main trait is that he has a voracious appetite. The man has a smorgasbord any time he is reviewing a case in the main conference room and has no problem stealing or enjoying other people’s meals.

Booth has seemingly adopted him into the family, especially after his less than stellar childhood was revealed. His father left him and his mother after he was released from jail for working a Ponzi scheme. Aubrey manages to fit in well with the rest of the team as well due to his diverse background knowledge and studies. He fits in best with Hodgins, as he has a better than average knowledge of chemistry and shares a childhood wonder with him regarding most of their cases.

Aubrey also bonded a couple times with Brennan, funnily enough in a similar way to how she once befriended Sweets. The two worked together on a case, and, due to being abandoned by a parent, were able to bond over their similar childhoods. She doesn’t interact with Aubrey as much as she did with Sweets, for no real reason that we can see. It could be that Bones fans are still angry over Sweets’ untimely death and they want fans to embrace Aubrey completely before fully integrating him.

But fans know that Sweets was the child/little brother in Booth and Brennan’s relationship and that can never be replaced. Having lived with them and helping care for Christine when she was a baby is something Aubrey can never do and that’s okay. As Sweets’ replacement, he is doing okay in our books. Mostly because Sweets can never be replaced. And that may be why he hasn’t been as integral to the show as Lance was, and who knows if that will ever happen. The show needs to be picked up for an 11th season. And then we will just have to see.

What do you think of Aubrey? Is he fitting in with the team? Let us know below!
