Following the departure of Danny Boyle, Bond 25 has hired Cary Fukunaga to direct the next installment.

Update 2 (September 20): The official Bond Twitter account announced on Thursday morning that Fukunaga will helm the movie. Bond 25 will now be released February 14, 2020, with filming beginning on March 4, 2019.

Fukunaga is best known for directing season 1 of HBO’s critically acclaimed True Detective. He also directed Beasts of No Nation.

Update (August 23): According to sources speaking to THR, Bond will now miss its November 8, 2019 release date. Not only was Boyle’s departure bad news, but there was reportedly already talk of delaying the movie to 2020.

Original story (August 21): At the moment, the only reason for his departure is “creative differences,” which were not elaborated on. It would’ve been Boyle’s first Bond film.

The 25th installment in the James Bond series, which already has reluctant star Daniel Craig aboard, would’ve followed 2015’s Spectre and 2012’s Skyfall. Both were directed by Sam Mendes.

Boyle is known for helming 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, and Steve Jobs. Word of his involvement in the long-running 007 series first surfaced in March.

Bond 25 is slated to hit theaters November 8, 2019 with production beginning at the end of this year — assuming a new director can be found fast enough.
