Black Sails just aired, and nothing was as expected.

Flint and Barlow deliver Abigail

Abigail Ashe (Meganne Young) is finally returned to her father, Lord Peter Ashe (Nick Boraine), by her two new BFFs and his former BFFs: Captain Flint (A.K.A. James McGraw) and Mrs. Barlow (A.K.A. Lady Hamilton). It certainly wasn’t easy going. Abigail often mused on the journey if she could trust them to ensure her safe arrival in South Carolina. Things didn’t get easier on shore as Flint found himself being beaten by the local militia until Abigail stepped in. It was a good thing for Flint (Toby Stephens) and Barlow (Louise Barnes) that Abigail suddenly developed a backbone, and decided to speak up and save her rescuers. Despite a rough beginning, by the end, however, there seemed to be the starts of an “all’s forgiven” reunion, but can things last?

Silver’s woes

A secret is only as good as the men you have keeping it, and John Silver (Luke Arnold) seems to have picked an 18th century version of Dumb and Dumber to keep his. Now with the untimely death of one secret keeper at the hands of the other, are things going to continue to unravel? The only hope is that there are bigger, looming issues. Will Silver and Billy Bones (Tom Hopper) unite since they are left aboard the Spanish war ship, since trouble is lurking in the water? Will Mr. Scott (Hakeem Kae-Kazim), the only other man left on the ship that the men respect, help them?

A woman scorned

Why, hello there, deposed brothel owner. Was anyone else wondering why no one put the former madam on a boat to a location far, far away? This is why things never go well for both Rackham (Toby Schmidt) and Max (Jessica Parker-Kennedy); they consistently forget to tie up loose ends. With this women working for Eleanor, Max and Rackham’s ill-thought out plan of “Let’s empty the ship on the beach and maybe no one will notice,” coupled with, “Oh, you mean the gold won’t fit in this tiny vessel?” is a without question going to lead to disaster.

Regrettable partners

Now that Max and Rackham are partners, part of Rackham is starting to miss Anne (Clara Paget), even if he can’t admit it. It’s definitely a case of be careful what you wish for. Rackham might like where he thinks his plans are going, but Anne as the muscle to carry them out isn’t there, his plans are likely going no place fast. It does make you wonder once he broke into the fort and found Richard Guthrie hanging there if his first thought wasn’t that he needs Anne’s protection — and now.

The unexpected

Well, we sure didn’t see that coming! Of all the things we thought Charles Vane (Zach McGowan) might do, killing Richard Guthrie, and leaving his body hung up in the fortress with an “I’m coming for you next” note was not one of them. On top of that, the thought that he might still show up in Charles Town to get his Spanish galleon that is currently Flint’s never crossed our minds. The great irony here is that if Flint and Eleanor had just allowed Charles Vane to deliver Abigail Ashe back to her Peter, everyone back in Nassau would have been rid of Charles Vane by now as he would have been shot on sight.
