On Black Sails season 2, episode 2, Flint is going to have to weigh his choices and allies carefully.

During last week’s episode, Flint (Toby Stephens) regained a ship. There are two important things to know. The first item to remember is that it wasn’t Flint’s ship, he stole it from under the nose of its Spanish crew. The second, and the more important item, is that by stealing the ship, Flint didn’t become its captain. Instead, Flint is now little more than a third class passenger who the rest of the crew is ferrying to Nassau, where he and John Silver (Luke Arnold) will be unceremoniously dumped off.

Since Flint isn’t the captain, things look like they are largely in the hands of Dufrene (Roland Reed) who, up until the end of last season, was a glorified bookkeeper and trade negotiator. His staunchest ally is Mr. DaGroot (Andre Jacobs), who is the master of the sails. It will be interesting to see if Dufrene and DaGroot can keep Flint at bay and run the ship. Although the two of them are good at their respective jobs, and have even risen to the occasion of now running the ship, can they keep it up? Neither seems to have the necessary charisma or cunning of either Flint or Silver.

As if things aren’t bad enough on the high seas, back on land, Ned Low (Tadhg Murphy) is making his presence known. Life was hard enough in Nassau without an unchecked psychopath running loose. The question is if anyone has the time, inclination, or power to control him. The likely candidates for that job seem to be Captain Vane (Zach McGowan), Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New), or Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy). Will he be someone they manipulate, willingly work with, or eliminate?

Black Sails can be seen tonight on Starz, 9:00PM ET/PT.
