We have five teases for the Black Lightning season 1 finale, “Shadow of Death: The Book of War,” airing Tuesday, April 17.

The synopsis for “Shadow of Death: The Book of War” reads:

THE SHOWDOWN – The aftermath of the showdown with Black Lightning (Cress Williams) leaves everyone reeling. Meanwhile, Tobias (Marvin Jones III) gathers his forces. Nafessa Williams, China Anne McClain, Christine Adams and Damon Gupton also star. The episode was written by Charles D. Holland and directed by Salim Akil (#113).

With that synopsis in mind, here are five teases to whet your appetite before the Black Lightning season 1 finale:

A love letter to the Pierce women

With Jefferson out of commission after having his heart stopped and restarted in the previous episode, the Pierce women are front and center. While Lynn uses her medical knowledge to look after Jefferson, who is not out of the woods, that is not her only contribution to the episode.

Anissa is ready to take action against their enemies, readily stepping into the role of protector of her family. And Jennifer, despite being terrified at the situation, does something incredible that changes the entire trajectory of the narrative.

A look to the past

The episode features flashbacks to Jefferson’s childhood around the time of Alvin’s murder. The dynamic between the young Jefferson and his father as well as Gambi’s entrance into Jefferson’s life are touched on.

It turns out, for instance, that Jefferson’s mantra he uses with his students comes from his father, as does his desire to do good in the community through non-vigilante means.

Lala plays his role

Tobias reveals the truth behind Lala’s resurrection and the phantoms Lala has been seeing since his return. He then uses those magic words — “The devil deals the cards” — to make sure Lala plays the role he’s been meant for all along. The truth behind Lala’s return also has wider-ranging consequences for future seasons.

The pods are addressed

For the last several episodes, Gambi, Jefferson, and Anissa have been trying to track down the pods containing the kids who developed powers after taking the ASA’s vaccine or Green Light. The ASA has kept moving them to avoid detection, but so much movement has resulted in several deaths.

Gambi wanted to find them to save the kids within as a means of atonement for his actions 30 years ago. Jefferson and Anissa wanted to find them to save them from those with ill intent. Though there is a lot on their plates, the Pierces have not forgotten the pods by the end of the finale.

There is set up for season 2

With Black Lightning having been renewed for a second season, it’s natural to wonder whether the first season ends with any hints about what is to come. The final moments of the season finale brings in a briefcase previously seen with Martin Proctor. Tobias opens it and, once he sees the contents of the case, declares himself king of Freeland.

It seems the rivalry between Black Lightning and Tobias Whale will remain central to Black Lightning in season 2.

Black Lightning 1×13 “Shadow of Death: The Book of War” airs Tuesday, April 17 at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
