We preview Black Lightning 1×03 “LaWanda: The Book of Burial,” airing Tuesday, January 30.

The synopsis for Black Lightning 1×03 “LaWanda: The Book of Burial” reads:

HOLDING OUT HOPE — As Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) tries to determine if the community can survive without the help of Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Anissa (Nafessa Williams) starts to come into her own. Meanwhile, Jefferson and Lynn (Christine Adams) try and figure out their new dynamic. Finally, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) reveals to her parents that she has been grappling with something big. James Remar, Damon Gupton and Marvin Jones III also star. The episode was written by Jan Nash and directed by Mark Tonderai (#103).

Here are five teases for the episode:

Black Lightning inspires the community

LaWanda is held up as an example for the people of Freeland to follow, as she was willing to die for her and her daughter’s freedom. Inspired by Black Lightning, the reverend at LaWanda’s funeral calls for his parishioners to march in the streets against The 100 to take their lives back.

Jefferson and Henderson try to talk him out of it, knowing full well the danger of a march, but he is not dissuaded. Black Lightning gave LaWanda hope and he gives the people of Freeland hope.

Anissa makes some changes

After stopping a robbery at a drug store in the previous episode, Anissa decides to embrace her abilities and tries to figure out how to harness them. While Black Lightning may not be an origin story for Jefferson, we are currently seeing the origin of Thunder play out.

Additionally, Anissa’s commitment issues with her girlfriend come to a head, and she makes a new friend who is a fan of the Outsiders comic series. (Note: In the DC Comics, Anissa is a member of the Outsiders team.)

Jefferson and Lynn have work to do

With Jefferson deciding to return to being Black Lightning, Lynn struggles with seeing the man she loves and the father of her children going back into harm’s way on purpose. She has too much experience with Black Lightning to have any illusions about the lifestyle of a vigilante.

The dynamic between Lynn and Jefferson is perhaps the strongest in the show, as it is complicated but still full of love for one another and their children. They are allowed to be human beings with messy feelings without either being the villain. It’s understandable where they are both coming from, but like rational adults, they also talk things out.

Tobias Whale answers to someone

“LaWanda: The Book of Burial” introduces Lady Eve, played by Jill Scott, a funeral parlor owner who was first mentioned in the pilot.

Per EW, Lady Eve bridges the gap between a secret group of corrupt leaders and The 100 gang leader Tobias Whale. She quickly becomes an adversary for Black Lightning, who has started causing problems for Whale’s criminal business since returning after nine years away.

Marvin “Krondon” Jones III, who plays Tobias, told CBR, “Lady Eve is the only person of authority over him. It means something to him, I think ultimately because it’s a woman. I think ultimately his affinity for Lady Eve has to do with the fact that she’s kind of a mother figure to him — but she’s not his mother.”

Jennifer and Khalil consider the next step

Jennifer and Khalil may have just gotten together in the previous episode, but young love waits for no one. Jennifer’s openness with her parents about her plans also leads to a hilarious scene where Jefferson gets to play protective father.

Of the dynamic between Jennifer and Khalil, actress China Anne McClain tells ComicBook.com, “He is a very great influence, which I really appreciate. He’s smart, he’s athletic, and he’s on his own path. He wants Jennifer to be along with him, but he’s like, ‘You keep messing up, this is not going to work out.’

“It’s great to see the roles switch a little bit because usually that’s the girl telling the guy, listen you’ve got to get your stuff together. The rules are switched in this one and it’s very, very interesting. I love that. A lot of things happen between Jennifer and Khalil. It’s a whole journey throughout their story. I’ll just say right now that she really cares about him and he really cares about her, but they have some bumps in the road coming.”
