We preview Black Lightning 1×09, “The Book of Little Black Lies,” which airs Tuesday, March 20.

The synopsis for “The Book of Little Black Lies” reads:

FAMILY ABOVE ALL – In the aftermath of the latest killing, Black Lightning (Cress Williams) works to clear his name while also hunting down the person responsible for his father’s death, and anyone else involved. Tensions remain high between Black Lightning and Gambi (James Remar). The episode was written by Keli Goff and directed by Tawnia McKernan (#109).

Here are five spoiler-free teases for the episode:

Jefferson is not taking Gambi’s reveal very well

At the end of the previous episode, Gambi revealed the truth about his past: As a former ASA agent, he was sent to Freeland where experimental drugs were being used in an attempt to sooth racial tensions. But when drugs, in the form of a vaccine, started giving kids powers, the kids went missing and Gambi turned to Alvin Pierce.

Reporting Gambi’s story is what put Alvin in Tobias Whale’s crosshairs and eventually got him killed. Gambi took Jefferson in and protected him in an attempt to make up for his sins.

With that confession ringing in his ears, Jefferson takes his frustrations out on a punching bag at the start of “The Book of Little Black Lies” before deciding to continue his mission to clear his name on his own. He can no longer trust Gambi — but Anissa wants to make her mind up for herself.

Jennifer reacts to her abilities quite differently than Anissa

When Anissa discovered she had superpowers, she was thrilled. As an activist motivated to effect change in the world, Anissa could get no better gift than powers that would allow her to make a difference on an even greater scale. She has been nothing short of enthusiastic to harness her abilities.

Jennifer, though, reacts very differently. Her aspirations are nothing like her sister’s, and her views on getting powers are also nothing like her sister’s.

More than that, she is furious at the people around her for lying to her. Protecting her through lies doesn’t hold up as a very good excuse, as far as Jennifer is concerned. Hm, does this situation sound familiar?

Gambi seeks to atone for his past sins

As previously mentioned, Gambi has a lot to make up for. But he is feeling the guilt for his past actions quite acutely. He might not be on speaking terms with Jefferson at the moment, but that doesn’t stop him from using his own spy skills to get stuff done.

He also reaches out to Anissa in the hope that she will listen to him, even if her father won’t. And to her credit, Anissa is willing to hear him out.

Henderson gets involved

The plot to frame Black Lightning for Lady Eve’s murder goes pretty high up the food chain, and Jefferson knows he needs help. He reaches out to his only friend on the police force, and Henderson reluctantly agrees to do some digging — after all, he knows he works alongside crooked cops.

There is a heartbreaking moment where Henderson makes a request of Black Lightning if he gets himself killed while investigating the corruption, and Jefferson is clearly affected by hearing his friend make such a request.

Jefferson and Anissa continue working well together

As in the previous episode, Jefferson and Anissa continue working together. Anissa does have to push her parents to keep her in the loop, reminding them that she’ll just go behind their backs if they don’t, but it’s clear that Jefferson has a huge advantage with a partner in the field.

Anissa has skills that Jefferson doesn’t, while Jefferson has experience that Anissa doesn’t. They complement one another, and together they can tackle more than either could on their own.

Bonus: A couple of Arrowverse heroes are name dropped

Are more hints being dropped that Black Lightning takes place in the same universe as the other Arrowverse shows?

A couple of female heroes in the Arrowverse are mentioned in this episode — and considering how many female heroes DC has in its repertoire that a script could mention, that seems intentional.
