We preview the penultimate episode of Black Lightning season 1, “The Resurrection and the Light: The Book of Pain.”

The synopsis for “The Resurrection and the Light: The Book of Pain” reads:

RETURN OF THE WHALE – Tobias (Marvin Jones III) returns to Freeland. He is tasked to capture — not kill — Black Lightning (Cress Williams) with the help of an unexpected source. After a battle of epic proportions, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) provide surprising aid. Christine Adams, Damon Gupton and James Remar also star. The episode was written by Jan Nash & Adam Giaudrone and directed by Oz Scott (#112).

With that in mind, here are five teasers to get you excited for the episode:

The ASA gives Tobias his assignment

It turns out that the ASA treated Tobias after his injuries from his confrontation with Black Lightning, and now he is healed. But the ASA did not heal Tobias out of the goodness of their hearts; Proctor tasks Tobias, as mentioned in the synopsis, with capturing Black Lightning alive because he wants to study his metahuman abilities.

Tobias — and the audience — also receives a shock when Proctor reveals he finished a project Tobias had been working on before his injury. I’ll leave the identity of this project up to your imagination.

But Tobias is playing his own game

Though Tobias is unhappy about being ordered to capture Black Lightning alive, it’s clear that is only one part of a much larger picture. With Lady Eve dead — because of Tobias, let’s not forget — Tobias has taken her place at the table with the big boys. He is maneuvering himself into position to be a real player.

Moreover, the episode features the highly-anticipated reunion between Lala and Tobias, the latter having killed the former. But Tobias is completely unsurprised by Lala’s resurrection. Lala has a part to play in Tobias’s larger plan, and Tobias seems to have a way to control Lala’s impulsiveness.

Jennifer continues to see her powers as a burden

With Lynn conducting some tests on Jennifer with the hope of isolating her metahuman gene, Jennifer hopes Lynn will be able to cure her of her abilities. Lynn is sympathetic but also does not think anything is wrong with her daughter that needs curing.

But when Tobias attacks Garfield High to lure out Black Lightning, Jennifer sees her father and sister fighting for their lives and cannot turn her back, not when she might be able to help. And, as the synopsis hints, she provides surprising aid in the battle, doing something for her loved ones that only her abilities can.

Anissa is getting really good at this hero thing

Anissa continues to prove herself, both in and out of costume, a vital ally to Jefferson and Gambi. The trio continues to look for the pods containing the missing kids, and there is a moment in Gambi’s basement as the ex-spy watches his surrogate niece with a proud smile because she is good at investigation.

And when Tobias attacks the high school, Anissa further proves herself in the field as well. She comes across Syonide holding students hostage in a classroom, though she lets them go when Thunder arrives. Cue an intense fight between the two women that shows off Anissa’s strong grasp of her abilities as well as the hand-to-hand skills she’s learned.

Jefferson and Lynn navigate their relationship

One of the messiest and most complex dynamics on Black Lightning has been the one between Jefferson and Lynn, and that continues in this episode. Lynn has come to some realizations about her love for Jefferson and what may or may not have broken them up the first time, and she takes some steps. Jefferson, of course, has never stopped loving Lynn.

But when Jefferson discovers the tests Lynn has been conducting on Jennifer, he misunderstands her intentions and the fragile dynamic between the two cracks a bit further.
