We preview Black Lightning 1×11 “Black Jesus: The Book of Crucifixion,” which airs Tuesday, April 3.

The synopsis for “Black Jesus: The Book of Crucifixion” reads:

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL – As suspicions grow that Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is Black Lightning, the ASA arranges to have him arrested. Lynn (Christine Adams) seeks help from Detective Henderson (Damon Gupton). Meanwhile, as Jefferson is in custody, Gambi (James Remar) and Anissa (Nafessa Williams) work together to show Black Lightning is still running around the streets of Freeland. China Anne McClain and Marvin Jones III also star. The episode was written by Melora Rivera and directed by Michael Schultz (#111).

Here are five teases to whet your appetite ahead of the episode:

The ASA takes advantage of crooked cops

The corruption of the Freeland Police Department continues to rear its head; the ASA takes advantage of the many dirty cops by paying them to frame Jefferson as a Green Light dealer. The frame job is done as publicly as possible, and Jefferson is marched out of school in handcuffs, much to the dismay of his faculty and students — especially Anissa and Jennifer.

But Jefferson isn’t friendless

Though it seems sometimes like the entire Freeland PD is corrupt, that isn’t true. And Jefferson happens to be close friends with one of the good ones. Henderson knows immediately that Jefferson isn’t guilty of the crimes he’s been accused of. And considering he has seen the corruption of some of his fellow cops firsthand, Henderson has his friend’s back.

Unfortunately, Jefferson can’t read Henderson into what is really going on — not without making him compromise himself and his values — so Henderson is frustrated with Jefferson but still does what he can to help.

Gambi continues to atone through his actions

Still battered and bruised from his torture session in the previous episode, Gambi continues to work to aid Jefferson however he can as a means of atonement — but also out of love. When the episode begins, Gambi is trying to help Black Lightning and Thunder track down the missing kids.

And when Jefferson is arrested, Gambi talks Anissa into acting in the most intelligent way to convince the ASA that Jefferson isn’t Black Lightning.

And Jefferson takes notice

Jefferson might be stubborn and in pain, but he does recognize what Gambi is doing. It started with Gambi being tortured without giving up Jefferson’s identity, and his work to help get the ASA’s suspicions off of Jefferson are enough to convince Jefferson to, if not forgive Gambi, find a new dynamic that they can both be comfortable with.

Mrs. Fowdy is unhappy with this turn of events

At the end of the previous episode, we learned that Jefferson’s vice principal, Kara Fowdy, is an ASA agent. She is performing the same job Gambi did three decades ago by looking for and abducting kids who are manifesting abilities.

Though she declared that she could turn on Jefferson, who the ASA believes to be Black Lightning, it’s not easy for her to do her job. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it, but she doesn’t have to like it.
