Black Adam — a.k.a Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s long gestating anti-hero movie — finally has an official release date: December 22, 2021.

It’s been over a decade since Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announced that he would be playing the DC supervillain/anti-hero Black Adam, with only a few updates here and there to let fans know that he was still attached to the part and still interested in playing the character.

Part of the reasoning behind the movie being held up in pre-production purgatory so long likely stems from the fact that Dwayne Johnson is continuously starring in new films, so it can be hard to get him to pin down the time for such a massive undertaking.

The other reason it’s taken so long to get a Black Adam movie is because WB/DC has been a studio in flux for so many years, and after their frequent missteps, they probably didn’t know where to slot in a Black Adam film.

However, in recent years, the studio seems to have gotten itself back in order. Wonder Woman was a critical and commercial hit, Aquaman was its first billion-dollar performer and Joker just became the most profitable comic book movie of all time.

Add onto this, too, that Shazam — which is not only the nemesis of Black Adam but was released last year with the help of Dwayne Johnson’s production company — made back triple its budget and was likewise a critical hit.

Which means it looks like after a decade of stalling, Black Adam is finally ready to make its big screen debut.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson took to Instagram earlier today to finally and formally announce that the long-gestating anti-hero movie finally has a release date of December 22, 2021.

That release date means that 2021 will be a packed one for comic book movie buffs everywhere, with the MCU releasing three movies (Shang-Chi, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Doctor Strange 2), Sony/MCU releasing another Spider-Man movie and DC releasing three movies (The Batman, Suicide Squad 2, and now Black Adam).

As you can see from the Instagram post, it looks like the film will be tackling Black Adam more as an anti-hero than as a straight up supervillain as he’s often been in the comics.

Though he was originally created as a cut and dry supervillain in opposition to Shazam/Captain Marvel, more recent stories have retconned Black Adam into an arrogant, impulsive and violent anti-hero who was corrupted by an external force. Geoff Johns’ JSA comic book of the early 2000s in particular highlighted him as a repentant anti-hero who simply cares about his own people more than anyone else rather than a simple supervillain.

Black Adam will be directed by Jungle Cruise’s Jaume Collet-Serra with Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. There have been rumors that Hawkman and Hawkgirl will likely be part of the script, but nothing is confirmed as of yet.
