Warner Bros. will be releasing its newest DCEU film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) earlier than expected on VOD.

According to Variety, Birds of Prey will be available to buy on platforms such as iTunes and Amazon for an expected cost of $19.99 and will be available to rent sometime in April.

The news comes after Universal’s decision send its current theatrical releases of The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt to an early on-demand release, as well as their upcoming family event movie Trolls World Tour, which will now release through video-on-demand on the same day as its theatrical release.

Following that announcement, Cathy Yan tweeted out that she wouldn’t mind Birds of Prey getting similar treatment and being released early on video-on-demand (VOD).

The decision from Universal regarding relatively well-received films like Emma and The Invisible Man, and now Warner Bros. with Birds of Prey, comes in light of theaters cutting their max occupancy by half — or straight up closing their doors to audiences.

Governments have also begun asking or requiring people to stay indoors to help curb the spread of coronavirus. Those factors combined led to record lows at the box office, thus spurring major studios to lessen the length between theatrical releases and on-demand releases.

Over the weekend, Disney released Frozen 2 on Disney+ three months earlier than originally scheduled. It also released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker for digital purchase a few days early.

Birds of Prey was first released in theaters on February 8, and though received generally positive reviews from fans and critics, underperformed on its $85 million budget, generating $177 million to date.

However, given the positive word of mouth and the increasing number of people staying in, it’s possible that the film will find a bigger audience and more success through video-on-demand.
