Monday was wild for us DCEU fans. Here’s everything we learned about the DCEU’s next few films just in time for San Diego Comic Con!

It’s been a quiet few months for DCEU fans. While we’ve know that Shazam, Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2 are set to be released later this year and next, we haven’t gotten too much content about them. And while we’ve heard announcements about Ava DuVernay’s New Gods, Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, we haven’t had much beyond those announcements.

But after months of lean living, Monday was a day where all DCEU finally felt well-fed.

Let’s run through the buffet of news!

‘Birds of Prey’

The biggest news to come out of Monday’s gluttony was the announcement of who would be included in Cathy Yan’s upcoming Gotham girl gang film (AKA my next favorite movie), Birds of Prey.

On Monday, The Wrap broke the exclusive news that the roster for the upcoming film wouldn’t be the familiar line-up of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Helena Bertinelli/Huntress and Dinah Lance/Black Canary.

Instead, the roster will include one of DC’s greatest martial artists (and my personal favorite Batgirl) Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya, a Gotham City police detective who takes on the mantle of The Question (and is one of DC’s few openly gay characters!), along with Huntress and Black Canary.

While Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl seems to be absent from the movie, there’s still plenty of chance that Oracle will be the Barbara alter-ego that shows up instead.

We also learned that the villain will be someone who has never appeared on the big screen. That leaves a lot on the table, so it’ll be fun to brainstorm for the next few months over who it might be.

Either way, I’m super pumped for this movie, which not only features an Asian-American female director and a mixed Asian-British writer, but should also (hopefully) have three women of color leading its cast. Let the fancasting begin!

‘Aquaman’

After months of what felt like a publicity drought, Monday was a veritable deluge of new information about Aquaman. We got an official teaser poster with the tagline “Home is calling,” as well as a gorgeous comic book inspired piece of artwork from Den of Geek that gave us a better look at many of the characters and creatures of Atlantis.

We also learned a lot of information from set visit reports. A few key bits of information:

Everything we’ve heard and seen so far about Aquaman makes it look like a mix of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, except underwater instead of in space or in some mythical land. I cannot freaking wait!

‘Shazam’

After months of fuzzy photos and poorly filmed fan footage, we were finally treated to a bunch of beautiful, high definition photos of the DCEU’s newest superhero movie, Shazam.

Described by leading man Zachary Levi as “Superman meets Big, Shazam is centers on Billy Batson, a 14 year old orphan who is given magical powers by an ancient wizard, here played by Djimon Hounsou. In order to access those powers, he needs to shout the magic word — you guessed it, Shazam — and he is transformed into a full-grown superhero.

The movie is much brighter and energetic than other DCEU films — and that’s exactly the point. It’s about a 14 year old who gets to say a magic word and become a superhero, living in a world that’s populated with superheroes. That kind of movie should be bright and exciting.

However, don’t expect Shazam to be a complete departure from or ignore the rest of the DCEU. A photo of Billy Batson and his best friend Freddy Freeman clearly shows ties (and is a fun bit of easter egg hunting for DCEU fans) to events that happened in the other DCEU films.

Likewise, Zachary Levi stated that people shouldn’t be worried that the movie will be too light in tone. He described it as having “an appropriate amount of levity and heart and darkness and grit and reality.”

That sounds absolutely perfect to me.

What a good time to be a DCEU fan. The future looks bright!
