While attending San Diego Comic-Con, Universal has announced that Billy Elliot and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close director Stephen Daldry will bring the Broadway musical to the big screen.

Deadline revealed that Daldry had signed on to direct, ending a lengthy process of meetings and discussions with various Hollywood hot-shots.

Based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, the 2003 musical is the thirteenth longest-running Broadway production of all time, and only the third musical to exceed $500 million in total revenue. As well as directing Billy Elliot and ELAIC, Stephen Daldry won a Tony for his work on An Inspector Calls.

Do you think Wicked could defy gravity with Daldry in the directors chair, or could it turn into “Something Bad”?
