Netflix’s Big Mouth has found its new Missy in Ayo Edebiri!

On Friday (August 28), Netflix announced that actress Ayo Edebiri has officially joined the cast of its hit animated comedy, Big Mouth.

Edebiri joins the cast as Missy, and has also joined the writer’s room for the series’ fifth season.

The Mulligan co-producer will be taking over the role from Jenny Slate, who has voiced the character sine the series first season.

Back in June, Slate took to Instagram to announce that she had chosen to walk away from voicing Missy (a mixed race character).

“At the start of the show, I reasoned with myself that it was permissible for me to play Missy because her mom is Jewish and white— as am I. But Missy is also Black, and Black characters on an laminated show should be portrayed by Black people,” wrote Slate.

“I acknowledge how my original reasoning was flawed, and that it existed as an example of white privilege and unjust allowances made within a system of societal white supremacy, and that in me playing Missy, I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people.”
