Liane Moriarty, author of the hit book Big Little Lies, says HBO has asked her if she can come up with an idea for a second season, and she’s agreed to give it a shot.

“I have started to think about ways this could continue,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald. “The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn’t write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we’ll see what happens.”

The new comments come after BLL executive producer Jean-Marc Vallée strongly denied the possibility of a second season last week. “No no, this is the perfect ending,” he said to Vulture last week. “There is no way; there’s no reason to make a Season 2. That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it’s finishing in a way where it’s for the audience to imagine what can happen. If we do a season two, we’ll break that beautiful thing and spoil it.”

What a difference eight days can make! Moriarty told the Morning Herald, “I’m absolutely open to it because, once I started thinking, it was too much fun to see what I could do and to see these characters again. And there’s definitely places you can go.”

‘Big Little Lies’ season 2 plot

Moriarty said that one aspect of Big Little Lies season 2 could be Bonnie’s history, namely, her abusive father. The plot point was included in her book but cut from the TV show.

“My original reaction was what have they done? How have they left that out?,” Moriarty said. “But a lot of people have said that they could tell [what was Bonnie’s true story], there had been little hints and that you can take that away. It’s implied in her performances and some little lines. I think I might have preferred to have had it in there but I wouldn’t argue against it either. It also leaves open the possibility of season two.”

Do you think HBO and Liane should pursue ‘Big Little Lies’ season 2?

Many people are opposed to the idea because season 1 ended so perfectly. But when a show is a ratings darling, it’s hard for a network like HBO to resist.
