Big Little Lies season 2 seems a sure thing at HBO, with production set to start in spring 2018. But who will direct?

Written by David E. Kelley, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and with an all-star cast including Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Zoë Kravitz, Big Little Lies proved a massive success for HBO.

It swept the Emmys 2017 as a limited series, and — like most hits on TV nowaways — will likely be returning in some form or another.

In fact, according to TV Line, a Big Little Lies season 2 is already in the bag, with sources confirming a spring 2018 production start.

Kelley has previously intimated to TV Line that a second season was in the works, and that the biggest issue would be the logistics of getting all of those incredible actors and actresses back together.

However, even though most of the pieces now seem to be moving into place, Collider notes that it may have to make do without its director.

Vallée has previously indicated that he would prefer for Big Little Lies to remain a one-season series, but that he might be interested in another season anyway — however, he is currently busy working on HBO’s Sharp Objects with Amy Adams, which might keep him busy through spring 2018.

Although Vallée was a huge part of making Big Little Lies a success in the first place, it would certainly be interesting to see what another high-profile director would be able to do with it. And, considering that Big Little Lies is largely celebrated for being such a female-centric series, we might even imagine that they’d think about bringing a female director on board to helm this time around.
