The Favorite Daughter author Kaira Rouda loves Big Little Lies as much as we do, so she gave us five books to hold us over until the series returns.

5 books to hold you over until the return of ‘Big Little Lies’

by Kaira Rouda

The good news: Big Little Lies is coming back to the small screen on June 9. The bad news: there are still two long weeks we have to wait for it. That’s just unfair.

If the Big Little Lies season 2 trailer that dropped has whetted your appetite, but left you hungry for a chilling read, here are five domestic thrillers to satisfy your craving for well-bred psychopaths until the crew from Monterey returns.

1) ‘The Night Before’ by Wendy Walker

There’s nothing quite like going home to the suburbs. Like me, Wendy Walker has a fascination with what I like to call“suburban suspense”—these stories have characters who are blessed with everything money can buy, who are the envy of others, but behind closed doors, things just aren’t that perfect. In this case, Laura believes she’s the girl no one will love. By the time we meet her, she’s living at her sister’s house in the suburb where she grew up, and she’s gone missing after a blind date with a man she met on the internet. What could possibly go wrong?

2) ‘Layover’ by David Bell

I’ve been spending a lot of time in airports lately. Layover was a perfect companion for my latest trip and now I find myself looking around, wondering who is hiding in plain sight. Is that guy in the sunglasses undercover? Is the woman with the bright red lipstick a foreign operative? Who knows? What I do know is David Bell took a wonderful premise and turned it into a page-turner. Enjoy!

3) ‘The Last Time I Saw You’ by Liv Constantine

Were you as obsessed with The Last Mrs. Parrish as I was? I loved that book and how Amber got exactly what she deserved. Now the sister writing duo is back and better than ever, dropping us into a lavish world of wealth and privilege where no one and nothing is what it seems. Enjoy this delicious summer read!

4) ‘My Lovely Wife’ by Samantha Downing

I couldn’t put this one down. The husband as narrator, something I used in my first domestic suspense novel, Best Day Ever, gives us a creepy, one-sided perspective of a macabre marriage. This disturbing couple is an original…and brilliantly executed.

5) ‘Dear Wife’ by Kimberly Belle

This novel’s pace is breathtaking. I’m a huge Kimberly Belle fan, and she ups her game with this one, flipping every expectation on its head. If you’re looking for one last book to hold you over until the return of Big Little Lies, you’ll be in good hands with Belle’s latest heart-pounding suspense.

About ‘The Favorite Daughter’

And don’t forget to keep an eye out for my own novel The Favorite Daughter, which went on sale May 21. For this one, I channeled all my love of unreliable narrators. I wanted to take the idea that the most perfect-looking families are the most broken and the way narcissists are so good at hiding among us then see what happened when these two premises collided. I hope you check it out!
