It’s not super likely for Big Little Lies to see a season 3, but Liane Moriarty, the author of the novel, does have a spin-off idea.

Big Little Lies has been a huge smash for HBO. The show was intended to be a limited series engagement based on Moriarty’s novel of the same name, but when the show pulled in huge numbers and Emmys for HBO, Moriarty agreed to write more adventures for her characters, the Monterey Five, to create season 2.

Reviews for season 2 have most certainly been mixed from fans and critics alike, and it isn’t terribly likely that the show will see a third season. However, just as with Game of Thrones, fans have been hoping a spin-off might be in the works.

While we don’t know what HBO has planned, Moriarty explained to Variety that she does have an idea for a spin-off, though she hasn’t put a lot of thought into it just yet: “The only thing I had sometimes thought, even before any of this [the series] had happened, was maybe jumping ahead to when the children are in high school — years ahead. So, that’s a possibility, but not for years to come. I feel like I would need a break, too, before I did that.”

We definitely can’t blame her for needing a break. It takes a lot of time and work to write a novel by itself, but a novel paired with two seasons of a television show is an outrageous amount of work. We’d want a break, too!

However, we hope that the fact Moriarty has the inkling of an idea means that, once she’s had a chance to rest up from the excitement and work surrounding the Big Little Lies novel and series, she’ll eventually return to this space and some of the characters we’ve grown to love in seasons 1 and 2 of BLL.

Moriarty’s novel is on sale now wherever books are sold, and you can check out seasons 1 and 2 of Big Little Lies on HBO NOW or HBO GO.
