Big Eyes was one of the real surprises of last year’s award season. The biopic was certainly a change of pace for director Tim Burton. Burton has a style and tone that are similar in most of his movies, and his recent run of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, and Frankenweenie proved that, until Big Eyes, not since Big Fish had Burton done something really different.
Of everything in Big Eyes, Amy Adams’ performance as Margaret Keane was the highlight. Adams was awarded with her second Golden Globe win in as many years for the performance, a true testament to the strength of the performance in an overall decently strong field of nominees.
Big Eyes stars Adams as Margaret Keane, the painter behind the success of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz). The movie tells the story of how they met, how he took success for her popular paintings of waifs with big eyes, and what she eventually came to do about it.
