A new indie publisher is seeking to fund three books by fanfiction authors using Kickstarter.

Big Bang Press is a brand new publisher hoping to fund their first three books through a Kickstarter campaign. The twist? The three books they are launching with are all original stories by fanfiction authors and will feature artwork by fan artists.

The first three titles are A Hero at the End of the World by Erin Claiborne (a satirical Young Adult novel), Juniper Lane by Kady Morrison (a New Adult lesbian romance) and Savage Creatures by Natalie Wilkinson (a fantasy and psychological thriller). The first three chapters of each novel are available on the Big Bang Press website.

Each of the books are available as Kickstarter rewards, in both eBook and hard copy formats. As with all Kickstarter campaigns, no backers will be required to pay their contribution unless the entire goal is met within the deadline.

At the time of writing, the Kickstarter had raised just under $13,000 of the $40,000 goal. The campaign will run until Dec. 21, 2013.

Finding authors through fanfiction is not a new phenomenon. Books like Fifty Shades of Grey are evidence of the most straightforward pulled-to-publish fanfiction (stories that have been pulled from the internet in order to be published), while The Mortal Instruments author Cassandra Clare is proof that fanfiction authors can make it big.

However, for the most part these authors are considered exceptions. Big Bang Press’ emphasis on their fandom roots makes them unique in the publishing industry as it exists today. Their use of crowd funding is a clever move forward in an industry that is becoming more and more dominated by large publishing houses.
