Beyonce had no marketing leading in to her surprise new album release, but is on track to have the biggest album sales week in over a year.

Late on Thursday night, Beyonce surprised the world with the release of her 5th studio album. The self-titled album, which is only being sold digitally for now, includes 14 songs and 17 videos.

Billboard is reporting that Beyonce had not only sold 80,000 copies in its first 3 hours (that’s 12am – 3am eastern time, by the way), it sold 350,000 copies in its first 24 hours. Currently, Beyonce is on track to sell 650,000 copies of the album before the weekly tracking period ends. Billboard has also confirmed that the new album will indeed debut at No.1.

Not only will Beyonce debut at No.1 but she already has the highest selling debut week of anyone since Taylor Swift sold 1.2 million copies of her album “Red” in November of 2012.

To put Beyonce’s album success in to perspective, some of the most highly-anticipated albums of 2013 didn’t even come close to these numbers. Katy Perry’s new album Prism debuted at No.1 with 286,000 copies sold in its first week. Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP also debuted at No.1 and sold 258,000 copies while Miley Cyrus took the top spot selling 270,000 copies in lieu of her very ambitious marketing campaign leading up to Bangerz. Beyonce spent no money and made no public appearances to support her surprise release.

Whether you like Beyonce or not, she may have single-handedly saved a record industry that continues to struggle to find ways to keep itself above water in the digital space.
