Everyone loved Beyonce’s National Anthem performance at the Presidential Inauguration yesterday, but today we’ve learned a shocker: She actually lip-sync’d.

The news was uncovered by British publication The Times, who’s source told them that she had a pre-recorded version ready to go in case she didn’t want to sing live. In yesterday’s case, for whatever reason, she decided to use the backing track.

“We did pre-record it and it was Beyoncé’s decision at the last minute to go with the pre-recorded version,” The Times’ source. “We pre-recorded all music as a matter of course and have done since time immemorial. This is our 54th inauguration… There is no question of there not being any music – it’s not because the performer cannot do it.”

The Times notes that Yo Yo Ma prerecorded his cello performance in 2008, but that was most likely due to the cold temperatures affecting the performance of the instrument. Vocals however are usually not affected, thus the confusion as to why Beyonce would use the back up.

Watch her performance again below to see if you can tell:

We have to admit that it’s hard to tell she did fake it. When she pulls out her ear piece midway through because even she couldn’t handle her amazing power, we were completely sold on its authenticity.

Beyonce will helm the Super Bowl Half Time show in less than two weeks, and that performance will almost certainly be lip-sync’d.
