Popular ’60s sitcom Bewitched is officially heading back to television with an updated twist!

According to Deadline, ABC has officially given a pilot production commitment to a single camera reboot of the beloved iconic sitcom Bewitched, which originally aired back in 1964.

The updated version of the series comes from the mind of Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. The new iteration is set to focus on an interracial blended family. Joining her on the reboot is fellow Black-ish alum and writer/producer Yamara Taylor.

Barris recently inked an overall deal at Netflix, but the updated rendition of Bewitched was acquired by ABC shortly before the Black-ish creator and the network parted ways on August 15 of this year. He inked a new deal with Netflix shortly after.

The new series will center on a hardworking Black single mother named Samantha, who, just like in the original sitcom, also happens to be a witch with magical powers. She marries Darren — a white mortal who is described as “a bit of a slacker.”

As the series progresses, we’ll see Samantha and Darren navigating their differences. It also sounds as though the series won’t shy away from focusing on the social commentary.

The synopsis for the show, as reported by Deadline, also reveals that Samantha will “discover that even when a Black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”

Given the onslaught of remakes that have recently hit the small screen, we’re sure TV junkies are pretty tired of hearing word that another reboot is in the works. That being said, it sounds as though Barris’ Bewitched is gearing up to offer some pretty interesting insight into the struggles of being in an interracial relationship while still serving up a healthy dose of good ol’ witchcraft.

We’ll be curious to hear more about who gets cast on the show as the series moves further and further into production!
