The world of Bewitched may be making its way back into mainstream pop culture – if NBC has its way with a pilot.

Following a bidding war between NBC and the original Bewitched’s old home at ABC, the peacock network has committed to filming a followup series pilot.

Deadline describes the new show as an “imagining” of the original Bewitched which aired from 1964 – 1972.

The new Bewitched “centers on Daphne — Samantha’s granddaughter and Tabitha’s daughter — a single twenty-something witch, who has always used her magical powers to conjure herself the perfect life,” according to the report. “But she soon realizes that the one thing she cannot conjure and control is the one thing she wants most – real love.”

Red Wagon Entertainment, the production company behind the 2005 Bewitched film starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, will be producing the new series for NBC.

The premise does not sound particularly intriguing, but we think viewers would be interested in checking out a new witch-themed series. Supernatural shows are all the rage right now, but most of them lean toward darker storytelling like American Horror Story: Coven, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and of course Supernatural.

Why is Hollywood pulling from yet another old franchise to develop a new show? Deadline partly blames the fact that many successful creators are tied up with other series at the moment. There’s also the fact that this current season of television is lacking major break-out hits, hence the temptation to go back to material that Hollywood already knows.

If this Bewitched series never takes off (and maybe it’s for the best that it doesn’t), we’ll still have Jenji Kohan’s Salem drama at HBO to look forward to.
