The Breaking Bad prequel, and-sometimes-a-sequel, Better Call Saul may bring back beloved tough guy Mike, series creator Vince Gilligan says.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at length about the upcoming show following lawyer Saul Goodman, Gilligan specifically mentioned Mike when asked what characters could possibly make a comeback.

“The character that springs to mind would be Mike (Jonathan Banks),” he says in the interview. “That would be a great deal of fun. I would say the sky’s the limit, at least theoretically speaking. Realistically speaking, we’ve got a whole lot of actors, and the world is now well-aware of their wonderful talents and abilities, and therefore Breaking Bad has probably made it tougher for [Saul creator] Peter and I to get some of these folks pinned down for another TV show.”

Gilligan also teased that some of Better Call Saul could take place during the same timeline Breaking Bad did. “It could [be in the Bad era],” he says. “That’s why I love the possibilities of the show so much. Anything is possible, and I can’t make any promises that we will indeed see that kind of stuff, but I can tell you from a writer’s point of view, it’s very freeing and emboldening to have those opportunities available to you.”

One other character who could make a return is Gus played by Giancarlo Esposito. The actor candidly admitted in September he’d love to come back for the new show if he was invited. In a separate interview, Gilligan echo’d Esposito’s interest in a Gus return.

Better Call Saul is expected to premiere sometime this year on AMC. All episodes will be available on Netflix immediately after season 1 airs on TV.
