Returning shows

Brooklyn 99

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has gotten off to quite the start in season 2. It hasn’t lost a bit of what made it special in season 1, and has added even more elements to keep us head over heels in love. Holt not only participates in the games that Jake plays, but he’s better. If there’s one thing that Jake needs, it’s a worthy adversary, and Holt is definitely his match. Terry, Santiago, Rosa, Boyle, Gina, heck, even Scully and Hitchcock are back with all the flavor and fun you could ask for. Whether they’re chasing after bad guys or horsing around with things like the Jimmy Jab Games, this is one ridiculously entertaining group. If you really need a good laugh on Sunday nights, check out Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

‘Arrow’

Arrow has been nothing short of a standout in its first two seasons on The CW, and the third season has somehow managed to raise the bar even higher. Never comfortable with the status quo, Arrow‘s third season hasn’t wasted any time shaking things up. With Oliver having successfully transitioned from vigilante to hero, there is more room for the supporting characters to grow and only further enrich the landscape of Starling City. Season 3 has also repopulated with a batch of new characters who are set to complicate the lives of our heroes — or perhaps become heroes in their own right. Between Arrow and sister series The Flash, comic book television is at the top of its game on The CW.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Critics seem to love harping on season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but nothing makes a better argument for focusing on the present than the show itself. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 is moving at breakneck speed. Now the organization’s last line of defense, Coulson’s team is forced to make desperate choices which lend compelling edges to every member of the once-cheery crew.

But Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 also knows when to slow down. Dramatic stand-offs and speedy chases are expertly intercut with bracing emotional moments. A weighty conversation between Coulson and May, the building tragedy of Fitz and Simmons, even an honest moment between newcomers Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter prove that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can not only handle emotional weight – it thrives on it.

Add in increasingly piquant humor and percolating mysteries which tease links to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 is what we always wanted it to be – absorbing entertainment, and ruthlessly compelling television.

Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time‘s decision to ignore the advice of “Let It Go” is paying off big time. Opening with the highest numbers for an episode in two years, Once Upon a Time‘s Georgina Haig and Elizabeth Lail shine in the roles of Arendelle sisters Elsa and Anna. Elizabeth Mitchell delivers a stunningly cryptic performance as the Snow Queen. There’s no need to run off and refresh your Frozen knowledge, the creators spin on the tale offers rewarding story lines for both novices and experts alike. Brew some cocoa and gear up for even more family drama than you ever thought to expect from Once Upon a Time!

‘AHS: Freak Show’

AHS: Freak Show is Ryan Murphy’s craziest fever dream yet. Taking the simple idea of a failing freak show, AHS weaves emotionally jarring and terror inducing stories of humanity into every episode. The assembled cast is not short on talent as this season returns with Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates leading the troupe. Evan Peters’ performances demand your attention and spin your emotions, demanding you to feel his pain. Sarah Paulson, whose mastery of playing Siamese twins Bette and Dot is a marvel to watch. AHS has outdone itself, creating a villain whose terrifying appearance is nothing compared to the twisted mind that follows his lead. You’re going to want to catch up on this series before the freak show is run out of town.

‘Castle’

After last year’s season finale, Castle had a lot to live up to and so far the results have been a mixed bag. But there’s hope! After establishing a new mystery surrounding Castle, the show returned to its comedy roots in back to back episodes. And the upcoming episodes preview the wedding Caskett fans have been pining for and we’re betting it won’t disappoint. That will be followed by a very Castle honeymoon, and potentially some answers to our new central mystery. So catch up because it looks like things are picking up for Castle!

New shows

‘How To Get Away With Murder’

How to Get Away With Murder premiered this season as one of television’s best new dramas. It’s not easy to follow in the massive footsteps of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, but leave it to ShondaLand to top even her own biggest hits. Viola Davis is captivating and seductive as Annalise Keating, while her students breathe new life into network television as they continue to push gender, sex and race boundaries week after week. If you have yet to start watching this sexy thriller, we suggest you catch up so you know what everyone is talking about Friday morning.

‘The Flash’

The Flash has been under a microscope since the project was announced, and expectations were off the charts by the time the fall television season began. Thankfully, the Arrow spinoff has not disappointed yet. The charming Grant Gustin sets the tone as the geeky CSI-turned-superhero, Barry Allen, and the rest of the cast does not disappoint either. The show is lighthearted in a way Arrow can’t be — yet the shared universe has already allowed for some fun crossover. With surprisingly good special effects, characters full of heart, and an unapologetic love of its own genre, The Flash is a bona fide hit.

‘Gotham’

Gotham had some big shoes to fill from the beginning. Despite having seen the Batman universe on television and movie screens, Gotham sought to explore what leads up to the city overrun by criminals like Penguin, The Joker, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. And boy has it delivered, just six episodes in and fans are already hooked and eagerly waiting to see where the series will go.

The writers of Gotham have successfully shown the human side of the infamous villains of Batman and made us fall in love with them. Oswald for his awkwardness – despite violent tendencies, Nygma for his never ending excitement, Selina for thriving in the worst of situations, and Ivy for being a sweet girl surrounded by violence.

Of course, fans also love Gotham’s guardian angel Gordon. And his wayward partner Bullock who always comes through in the end. As well as Bruce as he grows into the hero he will one day become.

What keeps pulling fans in every week is a look into what made these characters the ones we all grew up loving.

‘A to Z’

Note: This series has been canceled by NBC, but the remaining episodes are still scheduled to air.

The newest ‘rom-sit-com’ to bow this season, A to Z, aims to tell the story of Andrew and Zelda as they date for “eight months, three weeks, five days and one hour.” Five episodes into the series, Ben Feldman (Andrew) and Cristin Milioti (Zelda) have shown adorable chemistry and the storylines offer a promising future. Despite the ticking clock on their relationship, we don’t know if that leads to a break up, or a marriage. For now, the two are dealing with the preliminary stages of a relationship and all the tip-toeing around one another that comes with it. When is it okay to cry in front of the other person? How do you get your best friends to like each other? All answers we hope to find answers to as we watch the rest of the enjoyable season.
