The Playlist – the website that first reported The Hunger Games director Gary Ross would be leaving – has learned that Bennett Miller (Moneyball) and Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) are now in the mix to direct Catching Fire.

After it was revealed last week that Lionsgate was courting such directors as Alfonso Cuaron, David Cronenberg, and Alejandro González Iñárritu, The Playlist has learned of Miller and Lawrence’s potential involvement:

Sources close to the project tell The Playlist that “Moneyball” helmer Bennet Miller and “I Am Legend” director Francis Lawrence are also in contention for the gig.

For Miller, the question will be whether he’s willing to part with his current project, Foxcatcher, which Mark Ruffalo recently boarded. If that issue is able to be resolved, Miller’s directorial chops are clearly strong, having previously directed the Oscar-nominated films Moneyball and Capote.

Francis Lawrence, meanwhile, would appear to be free to board Catching Fire, coming off his most recent directorial efforts in I Am Legend and Water for Elephants.

If recent reports are any indication, there are now five directors revealed from Lionsgate’s supposed eight-man short list. Would you like to see either Miller or Lawrence board Catching Fire?
