Confederate, the controversial sci-fi drama from Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is officially a no-go at HBO.

When HBO revealed that Game of Thrones vets David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were working on a brand new sci-fi series for the premium cable network titled Confederate, the concept for the series raised more than a few eyebrows.

For those that need a bit of a refresher, the proposed sci-fi drama was first announced back in 2017 and was set to “take place in an alternate timeline where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution.”

It didn’t take long for both Weiss and Benioff, along with HBO to receive backlash from television viewers far and wide. Luckily for naysayers, now, it seems as though we’ll never have to live in a world where Confederate sees the light of day.

HBO has officially decided not to move forward with Confederate.

News that the proposed project was dead in the water comes straight from HBO president Casey Bloys, who confirmed the news to TV Line during an appearance at this year’s TCAs.

Previously, Bloys had said that production on Confederate had been put on hold— not because of the public outcry against the concept for the show — but because of Weiss and Benioff’s incredibly packed schedule.

With the Game of Thrones alums officially heading to Netflix after inking a multi-million dollar overall deal with the streamer, it seems as though it offered up an opportunity for HBO to sever ties with the controversial Confederate.
