Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has added another leading man to its ensemble cast. Actor Benicio Del Toro has reportedly been cast in Marvel’s 2014 futuristic, alien superhero film.

Benicio Del Toro has joined director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline reports that “his role [is] under wraps,” but that he will be signing on to play the character in multiple Marvel films. This isn’t unusual as Marvel has become known for signing talent to multi-picture deals in the last few years. Starting with their first monster leading man, Robert Downey Jr. with the Iron Man franchise and on to Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth in their respective franchises.

Benicio Del Toro will be joining what has become a massively talented cast including Academy Award winning actress Glenn Close, Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan, Zoe Saldana, along with actor Chris Pratt, who has been cast as the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord, and WWE star Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer).

Michael Rooker, the massive fan-favorite of The Walking Dead series has also signed on to play Yondu in Marvel’s space-thriller. Rounding out the cast recently is Lee Pace, who will reportedly play the film’s villain. Del Toro is known for his menacing roles in the past, so we may be looking at a possible Thanos casting here, but we’re unlikely to know until the film gets underway.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows a futuristic, alien superhero team protecting the galaxy from evil, led by Peter Quill. The team first appeared in Marvel comics in 1969, but weren’t given their own series until the 1990s. Check out our latest news on Guardians of the Galaxy, as the film will hit theaters August 1, 2014.
