In a new interview with the Radio Times, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be in the dark about the future of his beloved detective drama.

Cumberbatch, who plays the show’s titular character, says that he “genuinely” doesn’t know if any number of Sherlock series will happen.

“That’s not me trying to be mysterious,” he says. “None of us know if there will be a fourth, fifth or sixth series.”

Is it true that the future of the show is up in the air?

Those who’ve followed our Sherlock coverage know that the BBC and Steven Moffat have every intention of making a fourth series and beyond. In March, Moffat and co-creator Mark Gatiss said that they already have the next two series planned out. They went so far as to offer some specific teases about what we can expect in series 4.

Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be seeing it on our television screens until 2015 at the earliest.

The reason for the delay between each series comes down to the busy schedules of Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman. Earlier this month we told you that the two actors have signed on to separate London stage plays over the next two years which will only make scheduling series 4 more difficult.

Regardless of their busy schedules, Moffat should have a quick sit down with Cumberbatch to let him know that Sherlock will indeed continue.

In his interview with the Radio Times, Cumberbatch says that before a new series of Sherlock begins filming he does “a little swimming and yoga. It sounds funny, but it helps.”

We hope he’ll have to return to this physical training sooner rather than later.
