The first-look image at Marvel’s Doctor Strange reveals Benedict Cumberbatch’s costume, as the iconic sorcerer works his magic on us.

We’re stoked for Benedict Cumberbatch to join the MCU in the fast-approaching Doctor Strange, set to hit in November of 2016.

As Cumberbatch is one of the few current-and-future Marvel heroes not set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, we’ve all been waiting to catch a glimpse of him in the role — and now Marvel Studios has released the first official image, via Entertainment Weekly:

We’re not usually in the business of reporting on facial hair (that would make us Hairpable), but fans of the comic book character will be relieved to see that Cumberbatch will indeed sport a beard for the role. It’s not the Robert Downey Jr.-style black (slash dark brown), sinister goatee we’re used to, but it’s definitely very becoming for the usually clean-shaven Sherlock actor.

Doctor Strange is the first leading man in the MCU to combat the forces of evil with the help not of super strength or super tech, but magic. Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange is a sorcerer, who protects the earth from magical and mystical threats.

Despite the fact that the film is premiering in less than a year, filming only recently started, and Benedict Cumberbatch tells EW that he’s, “still in the infancy” of learning the complicated hand-movements Strange uses for spell-casting.

“It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically,” Cumberbatch says. “I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”

While not much of his costume is visible, we know from early concept art that Doctor Strange’s on-screen costume, isn’t too colourful.” One Twitter user who saw the artwork wrote, “From what I remember, robes are blood red and green and cap is black.”

Doctor Strange premieres November 4, 2016. Also starring are Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen.
