Ben Affleck’s next directorial project is Live by Night, where he plays a gangster who crosses the wrong mob boss and pays the price.

Turns out there can be honor among thieves. Affleck’s character isn’t exactly Man of the Year, but he’s got morals and he’s got a code. All that is challenged when a dangerous opponent comes after him.

It’s certainly an action-packed trailer that balances intimate moments with rapid gunfire. The 1920s look dazzling and dangerous, and while Affleck leads the charge, it’s Zoe Saldana who mesmerizes in her brief moments on screen.

The synopsis reads:

Live by Night is set in the Roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve, and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll. The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Live by Night stars Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Chris Cooper. It hits theaters January 13, 2017.

This marks Affleck’s return as a director following the success that was Argo. Affleck also directed Gone Baby Gone and The Town, and will follow up by starring in and directing the solo Batman film (which we just found out will also feature Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke).
