A tale even older than time is in the works at Disney+. Josh Gad and Luke Evans will reprise their roles as antagonists LeFou and Gaston for a Beauty the Beast prequel series.

Once Upon a Time creators and showrunners Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have teamed up with Gad to write, produce, and run the “limited series” spinoff to the 2017 live-action reimagining starring Emma Watson.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the new show, set “well before” the plot of Beauty and the Beast, as a “musical event.”

What’s more, Disney songwriting legend Alan Menken (the man behind all of your favorite Beauty and the Beast tunes) is thinking about getting involved in the project. As for appearances from other stars, like Watson or Dan Stevens? That’s described as “a possibility.”

The 2017 adaptation was one of the most anticipated Disney reimagining projects to date. Now that the studio is putting all of their weight behind their new streaming platform, it makes sense that they’d be looking to recent hits for more material.

They will also drop several limited Marvel series later this year, including Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision.

The news comes at a time when Disney has been under fire for how they deal with gay characters, or lack thereof. Presumably the Beauty and the Beast spinoff series could once again hint at LeFou’s sexuality, but then they’d need to push this show to Hulu.

Expect this show to debut by the middle of next year.
