With BBC’s Atlantis soon on its way, we’re learning a lot more about what the show will revolve around. And it seems the entire premise is exploring myths like Medusa, Hercules, and Jason before they become the legendary figures.

You may have noticed in the poster reveal on Friday that BBC’s Atlantis has a not-so-fit Hercules, portrayed by Mark Addy. Turns out that the show will look at Greek myths and legendary figures in a whole new way, and we’ll even get to see Medusa before she becomes snake-haired!

In an interview with K Site TV the show’s creators Howard Overman and Johnny Capps explain that they’re going to have fun exploring the Greek myths and how they began before history knew them.

Capps went more into depth on where they plan to go with the show, stating that “the tone of the show is very dark, but at the same time, we wanted to have fun as well, and that’s a way of sort of recreating the legend before it happens, so just as we’re having fun with the character, Jason, you know, with Medusa, we see her before she becomes a snake‑haired goddess.”

Capps also spoke on why Hercules isn’t the fit muscular hero we’ve all come to know: “Hercules, in our minds, you know, he is a strong man, but he’s a good spin doctor. He creates his legend as the series progresses. He’s not a particularly brave man, but he’s utterly charming and has a great sense of humor, and he creates the legend of Hercules. And we like just playing around with the legends. That spoke to us good, rich territory for reinterpretation.”

Much like Merlin, fans can expect Atlantis to take Greek mythology to a whole new level, not necessarily following that canon and historic details that we all know. Overman even joked “I’m sure there will be some Greek scholars who will get very angry about what we’ve done, but, you know, Greek scholars, I’m pretty confident we can take them.”

But what about the ending? When asked if the series will end with Atlantis‘ inevitable fall and destruction Capps stayed mum on the decision, stating, “we couldn’t possibly tell you that. That would spoil the series.”

Will you be tuning in to ‘Atlantis’ this fall?

Atlantis will be airing on both BBC One in the U.K. and BBC America in the U.S. The air date for BBC One has to be announced, but we know BBC America will air the pilot on November 23.
