BBC America has greenlit an exciting new scripted show, The Watch, based on Terry Prachett’s beloved Discworld book series.

Are you ready for another beloved book series to head to the small screen? Well get ready, because Terry Prachett’s Discworld novels are officially coming to BBC America in a new scripted series called The Watch.

As BBC America puts it in their official press release, The Watch is a “punk rock thriller inspired by the legendary ‘City Watch’ subset of Discworld novels.”

The series will focus on some misfit cops as they fight to save their city from normalized wrongness, from both the past and future, in a perilous quest. Fans of the books will find lots of familiar elements from Discworld like City Watch Captain Sam Vimes, Lady Sybil Ramkin, Carrot, Angua and forensics expert Cheery, and of course Pratchett’s iconic characterization of Death.

This show is going to be modern and inclusive, but will still honor the feel of Prachett’s original work in Discworld. Reimagined for television by Simon Allen, BBC America has said the show will have Prachett’s classic humor, heart, and ingenuity while feeling especially relevant and exhilarating for a new television audience.

Hilary Salmon, Executive Producer and Head of BBC Studios Drama Production London, said of the new series, “The Watch is a distinctly British but defiantly global exhilarating thriller that is disruptive in its approach to the fantasy genre and also big on the themes of mortality, inclusion, alternative facts and justice. It’s a dizzying riot of hope, joy, suspense and audaciously dark humor. We can’t wait to work with BBC America to bring it all to life for existing fans and brand new audiences.”

We’re excited to see more from this show as it continues to be developed by BBC America. If the work BBC America has done on groundbreaking shows like Orphan Black and Killing Eve are any indication, we’re in for a wild ride when The Watch premieres on the network. With the show just greenlit, there is no news on casting or release date, but we’ll keep you updated as more news drops about The Watch.
