After it was announced that the American broadcaster would be launching a contemporary Sherlock drama, fans around the world have been voicing their concerns all over the internet. Now it seems that BBC, the broadcaster that airs Sherlock in the UK, is making its opinions known.

Tabloid newspaper The Mirror is reporting that BBC America, the US branch of the British Broadcasting Corporation is “furious” that one of their “flagship programmes” is being copied by one of its rivals.

One source said: “This looks like a blatant attempt to copy and cash in. We want Sherlock to rate big in the States and this could take the shine off it.”

A US TV source said: “The success of Sherlock in the UK has been major factor of bringing Elementary to life. We believe this modern twist will appeal to viewers. We want fresh American faces in the role.”

Elementary, as the programme will be called, is to be set in the present day, but relocate the famous detective to New York City. It is worth noting that season 2 of Sherlock will be shown on PBS rather than BBC America, so the news should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, both the BBC and PBS are both likely to be annoyed at the move – largely because they will receive no copyright fee for the remake as the characters are in the public domain.
