The CW has cast Ruby Rose as its Batwoman.

Rose will play Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, first in the annual Arrowverse crossover this fall. Then, she will move on to a solo series, which is in development for the 2019-20 season.

The synopsis for the series reads:

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Greg Berlanti will join forces with Caroline Dries of The Vampire Diaries as well as Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns as executive producers. Dries will pen the script.

We previously reported that the network was searching for a queer actress to play Kate; Rose identifies as gender fluid.

This is an impressive name for The CW to bring in. Rose’s roles include Orange Is the New Black, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Pitch Perfect 3, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and John Wick: Chapter 2.
