Battlestar Galactica is getting a new video game, and this one is fan made! Diaspora: Shattered Armistice has been four years in the making and is now available to download for free.

Diaspora focuses almost exclusively on space combat, with both single player and multiplayer modes available. The Battlestar Galactica game has been developed by volunteers who’ve given up their free time to make Diaspora happen.

The game will be available on Windows, some Macs and Linux – Intel integrated graphics won’t be enough here however, you’ll need a dedicated graphics card for Diaspora to work correctly. For a full list of system requirements, head on over to Diaspora‘s forum thread.

Currently the multiplayer aspects are in beta, but you can test out an incomplete version via a separate download, which is also available in the forum thread. The team behind Diaspora aim to release new packages when they’re ready – the first release, Shattered Armistice, is now available to download, for free, from this forum thread.

Diaspora certainly looks impressive if the launch trailer is anything to go by!

Battlestar Galactica Online is the other most recent BSG game to have been released. The official Battlestar Galactica game was released in 2007 for the PC and Xbox 360 platforms. Both received mixed reviews. We hope that Diaspora can turn that record around.

While you won’t be able to control the Galactica herself, you can take part in the battle against the Cylons in an MK VII Viper, a Raptor or the new MK VIIe strike variant. You can play with your friends as Colonial or Cylon forces, and create your own missions.

The game is completely voice acted, and the music is inspired by the soundtrack of the television series. This is a game for the space battle enthusiasts, who’d like to delve into the world of BSG and take part in the race to save the last survivors of the human race.
