The Battlestar Galactica movie has been rumored for some time, but today it’s taken a big step forward.

Universal has signed Transcendence (starring Johnny Depp) screenwriter Jack Paglen to pen the project, according to Variety. The report says that the film is a “complete reimagining” of the story. Series creator Glen Larson will produce the film.

Battlestar Galactica was a television series first in 1978 starring Lorne Greene and Richard Hatch. The more recent series launched in 2003 and ran for four seasons starring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell.

The film adaptation is still in its early days, so no director, cast, or release date are known at this time. Needless to say, the project is highly-anticipated by fans of both incarnations of the franchise.

Paglen’s first project is WB’s Transcendence as a screenwriter. He is also a two-time actor in short films.
