Do bad reviews matter if you’re releasing a movie starring Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman? The answer is no.

Batman v Superman’s box office numbers are in, and they’re mighty impressive. Dawn of Justice made $170 $166 million in the United States and $254 million internationally over its opening weekend for a $420 million global pull. Domestically the film had the fourth-best opening for a comic book movie ever, placing the film behind The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron’s totals.

Batman v Superman squeaked by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2’s $169 million opening weekend box office to become Warner Brothers’ best opening weekend ever. It is also the best March opening ever, besting The Hunger Games’ $152.5 million pull in March 2012.

Update (March 28): The official numbers have revealed that Dawn of Justice made $166 million during its opening weekend in the U.S., not $170 million as originally estimated. This means it is not WB’s biggest opening weekend ever — that title still belongs to Deathly Hallows, Part 2 which made $169 million in its opening weekend in 2011.

Notably, the movie surpassed Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises films, but only just — those made roughly $6 million less than Batman v Superman (yet their reviews were much better!).

With good numbers like these, WB is all set to launch a Justice League franchise. Next on the DC film slate is Suicide Squad this August, followed by Wonder Woman next June. Later on down the road, other characters like Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg — who made brief but important appearances in Dawn of Justice — will get movies of their own.

Considering Man of Steel “only” made $116 million in the U.S. over its opening weekend, its safe to say the box office for BvS was huge thanks to the two huge heroes finally squaring off against one another. Even if their fight only lasted 10 minutes, and even if they suddenly were cool with one another once they both realized they have a mama named Martha.
