Batgirl is heading to the big screen with Joss Whedon at the helm. But who could land the titular role of Barbara Gordon?

With Wonder Woman making her solo-debut in June of this year, and no other female-heroes on the horizon until Captain Marvel in 2019, it’s little wonder that the news of Batgirl getting her own movie had us all incredibly excited.

Commissioner Gordon, as played by J.K. Simmons, will be making his first appearance in Justice League — but now, all eyes are peeled for his daughter: Barbara.

There’s no shortage of incredible talent in Hollywood for the role, but I narrowed it down to just five ladies that I would love to see tackle the part of Batgirl.

Lindsey Morgan

Lindsey Morgan would have, arguably, always made it onto this short list for potential actresses to play Batgirl. Morgan is an incredible actress, as she showcases week-in, week-out over on The 100, where she plays the inimitable Raven Reyes. Equally badass and brilliantly clever, Morgan imbues Raven with something a little feisty, and she can certainly hold her own as the world crashes down around her. She could bring that brilliance to Barbara Gordon with ease.

But there’s another reason that Morgan has topped this list — and that’s the very strong potential that she’s already landed the role if a series of coincidental social media activity alongside the Batgirl movie announcement is to be believed.

Mere days before the project hit Twitter, Morgan posted about something new being on the horizon for her.

But why connect it specifically to Batgirl? Well, Morgan later went on to retweet several articles about the upcoming film, as well as articles speculating that it might be her new project. Only time will tell whether or not that’s just coincidence, or more.

Amandla Stenberg

Best known as Rue from The Hunger Games, Amandla Stenberg is no stranger to a big blockbuster movie or action flick. She has an incredible talent for tugging on your heartstrings, but don’t let that fool you — she can be tough-as-nails, too. Perfect for taking on the role of Barbara Gordon and Batgirl.

Sternberg is the youngest actress on the list — but not by much — though as we’re uncertain what age Barbara is going to be, we figure we’d cover our bases from Burnside and up.

Zoë Kravitz

If we’re looking for someone to take on kick-ass action, we couldn’t do better than Zoë Kravitz. She’s certainly no stranger to being a superhero either — having previously played Angel Salvadore in X-Men: First Class. With credits to her name from high-budget action flicks, including Mad Max: Fury Road, and smaller, independent comedies, Kravitz could balance Batgirl’s more optimistic and lighter nature with her physicality.

We’ve got to get a little humor in the DC universe somewhere, right? And where better than with Batgirl?

Hailee Steinfeld

With the potential for Whedon to take inspiration from Batgirl of Burnside, Hailee Steinfeld was one of the first potential candidates for the role that I considered. She’s certainly no stranger to holding her own in an action-heavy movie, as evidenced by her part in True Grit, but it was Edge of Seventeen that put me in mind of Batgirl.

A little awkward, vulnerable, and trying to figure out her life, Steinfeld played a young woman uncertain of where she was going — but tried to be strong in the face of that. Plus, she has some incredible comedic timing and has clashed with a father-figure in multiple movies. Watch out, Commissioner Gordon.

Jane Levy

I couldn’t resist including at least one red-head on the list. But I didn’t gravitate toward some of the more potentially obvious choices. Maybe I was the only one that loved Subergatory, which was where I became most familiar with Levy, but her turn as Tessa Altman proved that she has the comedic chops for taking on Batgirl — seriously, we need a little levity in the DCU — but she’s also right at home in an action film (see: Evil Dead).

Levy is just waiting for a blockbuster role to propel her career that little bit further into the spotlight. Perhaps Batgirl could be that role.
